State-run marketplaces set their own windows: some run longer (to January 31 in California, New York and New Jersey), and a few end earlier. Employer open enrollment is set by each employer, usually in October or November. For the money side of the decision, compare Medigap and Medicare Advantage costs or a high-deductible plan against a PPO.

Retirement account deadlines

  • December 31: required minimum distributions, qualified charitable distributions and Roth conversions for the year. Unlike IRA contributions, these can't wait until April (except your first RMD; see below).
  • April 1: the one-time later deadline for your first RMD, the year after you turn 73. Waiting means two taxable RMDs in one year; the RMD calculator shows both.
  • April 15: IRA and HSA contributions for the previous year.
  • Your last paycheck of the year: 401(k) and 403(b) deferrals count in the year they're taken from pay. The year-end money checklist walks through the rest of December.

Why some dates move

When a federal tax deadline lands on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, it moves to the next business day (26 U.S.C. § 7503). That's why the January 31 forms deadline is Monday, February 1, 2027, and why the W-4 exemption deadline is February 16: February 15, 2027 is Presidents Day. District of Columbia holidays count too, so Emancipation Day (April 16) can push Tax Day later in some years, though not in 2026 or 2027.

Social Security and SSI work the other way: a payment due on a weekend or federal holiday is paid on the business day before. That's why some months have two SSI payments and others none. The Social Security payment schedule lists every date.

Federal holidays in 2027: Fri, Jan 1 (New Year's Day); Mon, Jan 18 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day); Mon, Feb 15 (Washington's Birthday (Presidents Day)); Mon, May 31 (Memorial Day); Fri, Jun 18 (Juneteenth); Mon, Jul 5 (Independence Day); Mon, Sep 6 (Labor Day); Mon, Oct 11 (Columbus Day); Thu, Nov 11 (Veterans Day); Thu, Nov 25 (Thanksgiving Day); Fri, Dec 24 (Christmas Day); Fri, Dec 31 (New Year's Day (observed)).

Some deadlines don't move: RMDs, QCDs, Roth conversions and charitable gifts must happen by December 31, and Medicare's windows end on the stated date.

Add the calendar to your phone

Subscribe to a calendar below and it updates itself when we add or correct a date, for example when the IRS publishes its final 2027 calendar. Download a file instead if you want a one-time copy with reminders; use the filters above to choose which dates go in it.

  • iPhone, iPad or Mac: tap Apple / Outlook and confirm the subscription in the Calendar app.
  • Google Calendar: open the Google Calendar link on a computer and confirm. Google refreshes subscribed calendars every several hours, so a change may take up to a day to show.
  • Outlook: in Outlook on the web choose Add calendar → Subscribe from web and paste the link (use Copy link).

Subscribed calendars come without alerts; set them in your calendar app, or download a file with a reminder built in.

Questions

When is Tax Day 2027?

Thursday, April 15, 2027, for 2026 returns. Extended returns are due Friday, October 15, 2027.

Does a state tax deadline follow the same calendar?

Most states with an income tax use April 15, but a few use other dates (for example Hawaii, April 20; Iowa and Delaware, April 30; Virginia, May 1; Louisiana, May 15), and disaster relief can move deadlines for people in affected areas. Check your state's revenue department. To see what your state takes, use the state income tax calculator.

Are the dates guaranteed?

Dates marked IRS draft calendar or confirmed each fall follow the published rules but aren't final yet. The IRS and Congress can also move deadlines, for example after a disaster. We update the calendar and the subscription feeds when that happens.
